I was really bad at English at school, so much that I have not even passed the test bachelor (series S FL2 was an option at the time).
At 25 I decided it was time to learn the language, at age 27 I began to make my American friends in Paris and at 28 I left the adventure in Australia, where I started a business and spent two years.
So I learned English on his own and it seems to be something of a surprise to many people, so I'm going to share with you the method that allowed me to learn English but can also be applied in any other language.
Not rocket science you'll see, it's mostly a matter of common sense.
No need to work much
To begin, it is important to work on the state of mind necessary to adopt a new language to learn, indeed when it comes to learning a language popular belief tells us that "it's a lot of work and then fluent ", well that is completely false, first it is not much work, just work a few minutes a day, and then you will always have new things to learn.
Kill boredom
Now you understand that learning a language was more a matter of patience that effort, turn to learning techniques.
First, "speak" a foreign language is actually several disciplines require different skills, there listening, speaking, writing and reading comprehension.
The general idea is to vary the exercises to make learning less monotonous and also at the same time to develop their skills in the different disciplines, here is a list of exercises to do:
Make a grammar lesson (sorry guys ;-))
Read a daily Internet newspaper article
Watch the news on the Internet (or other Cnn.com)
Watch movies and series in original version, subtitled then without subtitles
Find Internet song lyrics we love and seek to translate
Meet people of the language concerned for dialogue (also allows to make friends, it is not life grand?)
Read books (important to improve their vocabulary and better permeate grammatical structures)
In general, if you delve a bit on the Internet there are lots of free English classes for beginners -> http://www.engleskijezik.net/fce-cae-cpe-kursevi-engleskog/
Learn grammar
Some remarks concerning those years: for me it is vital to work the grammar because it is really the basis of a language, in English I recommend "English Grammar in Use" by Raymond Murphy, is that me served all these years, it is both comprehensive and didactic (each lesson is a specific grammar point and can be done in less than 15 minutes - exercises included).
My tips and tricks
With the Internet you have access to an infinite number of resources in the language concerned, which was unthinkable there are only 15, then employ it and abuse-in.
Often when learning a language it is also attracted to a country, read the newspapers in this country, watch news programs, soak up the culture.
If you have any hobbies or centers of interest are surfing the net in the language concerned, you will learn much faster and without even realizing it.
Start reading books in English as soon as you can, it really is a very powerful way forward.
If possible try to make friends who speak several languages in order to discuss the subject with them. It did not look like that but learning languages is a hobby in itself.
Once we have some basics it is important to meet people in the language concerned, it is not always easy but quite possible if you give yourself a little trouble, skip an ad, meet people on forums foreigners go on vacation in a foreign country, participate in exchange groups (or Meetup Polyglot), frequent the places they frequent.
To conclude
Learning a language should be fun and not a chore, I hated it in school and I was fortunate to acquire a taste, so if you're curious and you like traveling you start, because the world awaits.
Good example is my friend who lives in Serbia and has awesome website http://www.engleskijezik.net/ on how to learn english. He also traveled all around the world learning english language and culture.
